Hysterical Funeral
Hysterical Funeral
I had never seen a Pashtun funeral before. It was incredibly dramatic, with women in the courtyard wailing and shrieking an eerie, ghostly cry. My friend’s father had died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack.
All the girls in my department decided to visit her and offer our support, which turned into quite an adventure since there were no addresses in Peshawar. I was the only one who had been to her house before, and I was hopeless at directions. We wandered around for a while, asking anyone we could find if they knew the family. Eventually, we managed to cram all five of us into a tiny rickshaw to get there.
When we arrived, she was hysterical, continually wailing and shouting, “It’s been three days since my father died! It’s been three days since my father died!” She repeated, “My father was sweet; he was so sweet.” The way some of the relatives tried to comfort her was not very sympathetic, telling her, “Shut up! You’ve been crying for three days now.”
Please pray for God to comfort and give hope to this family during such a difficult time of grief and loss. I could share the gospel with them when I visited their house while her father was still alive. Pray that the message will resonate and provide the hope that is only found in Jesus.
