It's the Least Wonderful Time of the Year...

Ramadan begins with the usual disturbance of sleep, disturbance of attitude, general atmosphere of darkness.  Everyone is irritable, everyone is lazy, everyone is fighting. Much like the fast described in Isaiah to which God attested was not going to be heard on high.
The messed up sleep schedule, scarcity of food, and general malaise makes Ramadan not only miserable for Muslims, but also for anyone who lives around them this time of year.
Thank God I have been enjoying watching Gather25- a 25 hour church livestream right on the first day of Ramadan which has been very encouraging.
I love how comically honest the Pashtuns are. Muslims in America would say all kinds of ridiculous things about how Ramadan was the best thing ever and how they’re not even hungry. So when I came here and asked my friends if they were excited for Ramadan, I was surprised to hear a unanimous “No! Nobody likes fasting.” They were surprised that I would even think up such a silly question.
Pray for them to come to the end of themselves. Pray for me as Ramadan is always a miserable time of year.
Pray they would be fed up trying to earn their salvation and see their need for a Savior.

Pray for some believers in Afghanistan who were arrested.

Pray for my roommate who, despite quitting praying several months ago, washed her unused prayer rugs and is ready for the long month ahead. Pray she sees the futility and wrestles with what she sees. She testifies that I know God and God is pleased with me and she knows the hypocrisy and evil of those around us. Pray she sees the contrast as I eat all day and she knows I’m right before God and she sees the rest of society fasting and knows God is not pleased with their evil deeds. Pray she longs for the freedom I have found in Christ- not a freedom that gives license to bad deeds, but a freedom that chooses love and challenges the darkness.
